Slim Dusty 'The Melbourne Cup': There's a bustle in the city, there's excitement in the scrubs There's a drone of rowdy voices in ev. In a crucial Big Bash League clash at the Adelaide Oval, inconsistent Melbourne Stars will be looking to get the better of Adelaide Strikers on Monday morning to climb up the standings.
Melbourne Cup betting guide:
Betting for first timers can be quite daunting, so we have compiled everything you need to know about reading the formguide and putting a bet on.
WIN
The simplest bet type is also the most popular.
If you predict which horse will win the race you can take the complication out of the equation
and simply back that horse. If it crosses the line first, you are a winner.
In the Melbourne Cup there are 24 runners and you can bet on more than one horse.
PLACE
If you like a runner at big odds, or want to bet more conservatively, then the place bet is for you. Simply select and wager on a horse to finish in the top three.
A win, run second or third lands you in the money. Unlike the win bet, this gives you three times as many chances of collecting, but the return is not as generous.
EACH WAY
Having an each-way bet is splitting equally between a win and place bet.
If you have a $10 each-way bet it will cost you $20 as $10 is put on the win and $10 is on the place.
If you bet on a horse paying $5 the win and $2 the place and it wins you collect $70 as you win on both your win bet and your place bet. If the horse runs second or third you collect $20 as the place portion of the bet is paid.
TRIFECTA
The trifecta requires you to select the runners that will finish first, second and third in a race in the correct finishing order. If you “box” your selections, they can finish first, second and third in any order.
Flexi betting is available so punters can choose the amount they want to bet and get a percentage of the dividend.
FIRST 4
A winning First 4 bet requires you to select the first, second, third and fourth placegetters in the correct finishing order. You can also choose a Box First 4 where the four horses you select can finish in any order.
QUADDIE
To win a Quaddie, you must select the four winners from four consecutive and nominated races. You can select any number of horses in each leg and the cost is calculated by the number of horses selected in each race.
Check the Herald Sun form guide to see the Quaddie legs.
BIG 6
Pick the winners in six nominated races on the card, usually the last six.
The quaddie and the big 6 can be pretty tough to crack but the payouts are usually worth it, especially if you get a couple of roughies up. An important thing to keep in mind is, you can put multiple selections in each race. However, the more selections the more expensive the bet will be. If you’re betting with the TAB, you can also place a “flexi” bet, which enables you to increase your selections on an exotic bet without increasing your outlay. You then receive that percentage of the winnings.
HOW TO READ THE FORMGUIDE
It’s simpler than it looks, don’t worry! The Herald Sun liftout provides all the information you need and then some to have a cheeky flutter on race day.
Beginners need look no further than recent form, weight and price.
How To Bet On Melbourne Cup In Person
It’s usually a good indication on how a horse should perform if all goes to plan. Intermediate punters might also try and incorporate barrier, jockey and trainer into their calculations.
The detailed form inside the guide is handy also if you know what to look for amid all text and numbers. Beginners need not get bogged down in ‘Last 600m’ times and the like, but look at margins and the small summary at the bottom of each extract. The summary can provide an insight into how a horse travelled in recent races including any interference which may have impacted on the result.
