The road to the Kentucky Derby continues Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream Park just north of Miami for the G1 Florida Derby, a 1 1/8-mile battle for Kentucky Derby points. I’ve actually attended some races at Gulfstream in the past, and also took the entry test for the game show Jeopardy! there once.
Bourbon War (7/2), ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. and trained by Mark Hennig, Code of Honor (3/1), ridden by John Velazquez and trained by Shug McGaughey, and Hidden Scroll (5/2), with Javier Castellano aboard while being trained by Bill Mott, are among the favorites to win Saturday’s Florida Derby, which will be the 14th race on the card.

Code of Honor was the winner of the Fountain of Youth Stakes March 2 at Gulfstream, a race of 1 1/16 miles.
Those are the top three horses in the field, but Maximum Security (9/2) will be looking to crash the party. Also, Harvey Wallbanger (15/1), winner of the Holy Bull back on Feb. 2 at Gulfstream, will also be looking to make some noise and grab more Derby points. That race was also a slightly shorter 1 1/16 miles.
Code of Honor might end up being the co-favorite in this race when all of the money comes in Saturday afternoon. As mentioned above, this horse won the Fountain of Youth, but the field is much more star-studded in the Florida Derby. Still, I believe he’ll be the horse to beat after winning his last race by three-quarters length.

If you plan on an Exacta, which is betting the first two horses in correct order for those unfamiliar with wagering on the ponies, there are really three choices unless you like to roll the dice. I am going with Code of Honor, the No. 9 horse, paired with Hidden Scroll, the No. 1 horse.

You can also do an Exacta Box, which means you can win if the 9-1 or 1-9 come in first and second in either combination, although that pays slightly less than picking the first two horses straight-up.

It’s getting a little chalky in here, but it isn’t a bad idea to just roll with all three of the favorites in a Tri box, although I feel like I’ll be kicking myself for not including Harvey Wallbanger in here. Toss in the No. 4 horse, Bourbon War, along with Code of Honor and Hidden Scroll and celebrate with a nice glass of Woodford Reserve after a decent payday thanks to a horse named after the beautiful brown nectar.
